Favourite Recipe: Mom’s Crumb Cake

I can still remember the tantalizing aroma running through the house when Mom had been baking her amazing Crumb Cake. The lingering scent of spices from this simple recipe was enough to drive a small child…….teenager…….adult……INSANE! It seems that I’ve inherited that quality from my Mom 😉
I’ll show you how…………

    DORIS’s CRUMB CAKE

    1-1/2 cups brown sugar
    1-1/2 cups all purpose flour
    2 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp cloves
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 cup butter
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    1 egg (beaten)
    2/3 cup 1% buttermilk- with a drop of vinegar mixed in

1. Preheat oven to 350F
2. Mix brown sugar, flour, spices, and salt together

3. Cut in butter
4. Reserve 1 cup of mix for crumb topping
5. Add baking soda, baking powder, egg, and buttermilk to the rest. Mix well.

6. Line a square pan with parchment paper and smear a dap of butter into the corners that are not covered with paper

7. Add batter to pan
8. Evenly sprinkle reserved crumb mixture on top

9. Bake for 40 minutes

Cool for 10 minutes and have a piece while still warm because this is the absolute best! Although room temperature is good too 😉
